Mykonos in 3 Days: A Self-Drive Itinerary for First-Timers

Three days is just enough time to see the iconic Mykonos *and* the version locals love. Here's the day-by-day route we'd hand to a friend visiting for the first time.

Before you start

This itinerary assumes you arrive at JMK airport mid-morning on Day 1, stay in or near Mykonos Town, and have a rental vehicle from the moment you land. Distances on the island are short — nothing is more than 25 minutes from anything else — so the days are paced gently with long lunches built in.

Day 1: Mykonos Town & the south coast

Morning — Settle in Drop your bags, grab a coffee at Kiki's in town (or D'Angelo if you stayed nearer the port), then take the car for a slow loop around Little Venice. Park near the windmills, walk down to the water, and just look.

Afternoon — Psarou or Platis Gialos A 10-minute drive south. Pick a sunbed, swim, and stay for a long lunch. If you want the scene, it's Nammos at Psarou. If you want a calmer version, Avli tou Thodori at Platis Gialos delivers the same view at half the volume.

Sunset — The windmills Drive back to town and walk to Kato Mili for the classic sunset. Have a cocktail at Galleraki and dinner at M-eating (book ahead) or grab a gyro at Sakis if you want to stay casual.

Day 2: The wild north & Ano Mera

Morning — Fokos beach Set the alarm. Drive north through Ano Mera, follow signs to Fokos for about 15 minutes on a gravel road. You'll arrive at a wild bay with one taverna and almost no one. Swim, read, do nothing. (An ATV makes the gravel road much more fun than a car.)

Lunch — Fokos Taverna Greek classics, slow service, and a view that justifies the wait. Order the grilled octopus, a Greek salad, and whatever fish they recommend.

Afternoon — Ano Mera & Panagia Tourliani On the way back, stop in Ano Mera (the island's only inland village) to visit the 16th-century Panagia Tourliani monastery. Then continue to Ftelia or Panormos on the north coast for a late afternoon swim.

Evening — Stay north Have dinner at Kiki's Tavern (the one near Agios Sostis — cash only, no booking, queue and survive). One of the most authentic meals you'll have in Greece.

Day 3: Delos & a long final lunch

Morning — The island of Delos Drive to the Old Port, leave the car, take the boat to Delos (UNESCO site, birthplace of Apollo). The boat takes 30 minutes; allow 3 hours on the island. Bring water, a hat, and good shoes.

Afternoon — Lia or Agios Sostis south Back on Mykonos, drive south-east to Lia or south to Agios Sostis depending on the wind. Both are quiet, beautiful, and feel like a reward after Delos's heat.

Sunset farewell — Hippie Fish or 180° End at Hippie Fish (Agios Ioannis, sunset over Delos with a glass of wine in hand) or up at 180° Sunset Bar if you want the panoramic version. Either way, raise a glass — you've seen Mykonos properly.

Why a car (or ATV) makes this work

This itinerary doesn't work without your own wheels. Buses to Fokos and Lia simply don't exist, and taxis on Mykonos in summer are scarce and expensive. With a vehicle, every plan becomes flexible: chase the calmest sea, follow the best taverna recommendation, change direction when the wind shifts.

What to book

Pick up your vehicle at the airport and have it for all three days. Free delivery, full insurance, and a fleet that ranges from a Fiat 500 (perfect for two) to a Jeep Wrangler (great for groups and dirt roads).
