The Best Beaches in Mykonos to Reach by Car (2026 Guide)

Coastal road in Mykonos at golden hour
Skip the crowded buses and discover the beaches that actually feel like Mykonos. Here are the eight stretches of sand worth driving to, and what to know before you go.

Why a car changes everything in Mykonos

Mykonos is small — roughly 85 km² — but it punches well above its weight when it comes to beaches. The catch? The most beautiful ones are scattered across the south, north and east coasts, often down a single winding road with no public transport beyond the high season's overcrowded KTEL bus.

A rental car (or a sturdy ATV for the dirt-road beaches) doesn't just save you time. It gives you the freedom to chase the wind: when the meltemi blows from the north, you head south; when it's calm, the entire island opens up.

1. Psarou — the iconic one

The most photographed beach on the island, and for good reason. Crystal-clear water, a perfect crescent of sand, and the legendary Nammos beach club at one end. Drive in early (before 10am) to grab parking — the lot fills up fast and the road in is narrow.

Drive time from Mykonos Town: 10 minutes Parking: Free lot at the entrance, fills by 11am in summer

2. Platis Gialos — family-friendly base

Just next to Psarou but more relaxed and accessible. Long sandy beach, calm water, plenty of tavernas. From here you can also catch small boats to Paradise, Super Paradise and Agrari if you want to bounce around.

3. Agios Sostis — the wild one

This is the Mykonos people whisper about. No sunbeds, no music, no road right to the sand — you park up top and walk down a small path. The water is electric blue and the only "amenity" is Kiki's Tavern (cash only, no phone, queue worth it).

Why you need a car: No bus stops here. None.

4. Fokos — for the hike-and-swim crowd

Reached via a 4 km gravel road on the north coast. Bring an ATV or a Jeep — a small Fiat 500 will make it but slowly. You'll find a wild bay, one excellent taverna (Fokos), and almost no one on a weekday in May or October.

5. Kalafatis — windsurfers and long lunches

The east coast's best-kept secret. A 1.5 km beach with shallow water, a kitesurf school, and a string of laid-back tavernas. Easy 20-minute drive from Mykonos Town on a paved road.

6. Lia — the southern jewel

The furthest south beach on the island, and possibly the clearest water you'll see. Two organized sections, one wild end. The drive winds up through the hills past Kalafatis and feels like a small adventure.

7. Panormos & Agios Sostis (north)

Two adjacent beaches on the north shore. Panormos has a chic beach club; walk five minutes east and you're at Agios Sostis with absolutely nothing but sand and sea. The contrast is the whole point.

8. Ftelia — for kitesurfers

Big, open, exposed to the meltemi wind, and home to one of the best Greek tavernas on the island. Not a swimming beach when the wind is up — but on calm days, it's serene.

Practical tips for driving to Mykonos beaches

  • Fill up before you go: there are only a handful of petrol stations and they close around 8–9pm.
  • Cash for parking attendants: a few of the southern beaches have informal "parking guys" who'll wave you in for €5.
  • Sunset returns are the prime traffic time: leave the beach by 7pm or stay for dinner.
  • An ATV is faster than a car for Fokos, Mersini and Kapari: gravel roads with switchbacks.
